Cybersecurity Is a Big Issue for Small Businesses. Here’s What to Know.

Small businesses are twice as likely to be the target of cyberattacks as larger companies — and it could cost them.

Users at small businesses encountered 21 threats per user in the fourth quarter of 2023, compared to users at large companies that saw about 15 threats per user in the same three-month period, according to email and collaboration security firm Mimecast. Medium-sized businesses saw about 32 threats per user in the fourth quarter.

Small-business owners are at a bigger risk for cyberattacks because their employees are more likely to share in critical roles, and those businesses are much more likely to rely on credential-based cloud services for their operations.
