Huntington National Bank To Add Signage Atop 40-Story Uptown Charlotte Tower

By Symone Graham – Staff Writer, Charlotte Business Journal

Charlotte’s skyline is about to get a new shade of green.

Huntington National Bank (NASDAQ: HBAN) will add its name to the top of One South at 101 S. Tryon St., the bank said Sept. 28. The sign will face South Tryon Street from the 40-story tower at Trade and Tryon. The building will keep the One South name.

The signage accompanies Huntington’s expansion onto the 39th and 40th floors of One South, which CBJ first reported Sept. 28. The move gives the bank four full floors in the building.

The sign marks the most visible step yet in Huntington’s push into the Carolinas. The Columbus, Ohio-based bank entered the region in 2023 with a team of commercial bankers. It now operates 14 full-service branches serving 10 Carolinas markets.

Trent Holland, Huntington’s regional president for the Carolinas, called the sign “a symbol of permanence” for the bank. “We’re here to stay,” he said. “We’re excited to be here. We’re proud to be a part of the community.”

The sign will feature programmable lighting. It will glow Huntington’s signature green on most nights and change colors to mark community moments with other uptown towers.

Holland said the bank will join the city’s lighting traditions. “We want to match our friends and neighbors.”

Rock Hill-based SouthWood Corp., a veteran-owned company, is fabricating and installing the sign. Installation is expected to wrap up by late October.

“We certainly wanted it to be somebody local,” Holland said. “They do fantastic work.”

Huntington’s name will rise steps from Bank of America Corp.‘s headquarters. Holland said competitors in Charlotte are “very used to having lots of competition.”

“We think that we have our own niche and strategy,” he said.

Uptown boosters welcomed the move. “We applaud Huntington’s continued growth and investment in uptown Charlotte,” Michael J. Smith, CEO of Charlotte Center City Partners, said in a statement.

“Their decision to double their presence at One South, a premier workspace at Trade and Tryon, further elevates uptown as a financial hub and a magnet for talent,” Smith said.

Huntington did not disclose the cost of the signage. Monarch Alternative Capital and Tourmaline Capital Partners own One South. Trinity Partners leases and manages the building.

Huntington opened its regional headquarters at One South in 2023. The bank employs several hundred people at the tower and other offices across the Charlotte area. It will keep its space on the ninth and 18th floors.

Construction is underway on the new floors. Holland expects employees to move in by early next year.

The bank has committed to opening about 55 branches across the Carolinas. Its deposits in the Charlotte metro area grew 74% to $181 million in the year ended June 30, according to Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. data.

Huntington holds $284 billion in assets. It operates more than 1,400 branches in 21 states.

The sign will crown a tower with deep roots in Charlotte banking. One South opened in 1974 as North Carolina National Bank Plaza. It served as world headquarters for NCNB and successor NationsBank until 1992. NationsBank later became Bank of America, now headquartered across Tryon Street.
