Mitchell Community College Honors Dr. Ralph Bentley for Distinguished Service on Board of Trustees
Mitchell Community College proudly recognizes and celebrates the extraordinary service of Dr. Ralph Bentley, who is retiring after more than three decades of leadership on the College’s Board of Trustees, including many years as Board Chair.
Dr. Bentley first came to the Statesville community on July 7, 1966. His path to Statesville was shaped by a call from Dr. Holbrook of Davis Hospital, who recognized the community’s need for a pediatrician. Answering that call, Dr. Bentley established both a medical practice and a lifelong commitment to service in Iredell County.
For more than 30 years, Dr. Bentley has provided exceptional leadership and guidance to Mitchell Community College. His tenure represents one of the most significant and enduring contributions by a trustee in the institution’s history.
“Throughout his years of leadership, Dr. Bentley guided the College through periods of growth, change, and opportunity while remaining steadfast in a single principle: putting students first,” said Dr. Tim Brewer, President of Mitchell Community College. “His commitment to ensuring that educational opportunities remain accessible to all has helped shape Mitchell Community College into the institution it is today.”
Dr. Bentley’s leadership was instrumental in advancing key capital projects that have strengthened the College’s ability to serve its communities. During his tenure, Mitchell expanded its presence in Mooresville, acquired the former Davis Hospital property—now home to the Kutteh Health Sciences Building—and initiated development of the Public Safety Training Complex, scheduled for completion in 2028. These investments have positioned the College to meet both current and future educational and workforce needs across Iredell County.
Under his guidance, the Board supported the growth of academic and workforce development programs that provide students with high-quality, relevant education while addressing the evolving needs of local employers.
“His ability to bring people together, build consensus, and focus on the greater good helped ensure that the College remained responsive to the communities it serves,” Brewer added.
Dr. Bentley has also been a steadfast advocate for Mitchell’s faculty and staff, recognizing that the College’s success is built upon their dedication and commitment. He consistently demonstrated appreciation and respect for those who carry out the institution’s mission each day.
“As Board Chair, Dr. Bentley was known for conducting the work of the Board with professionalism, integrity, and efficiency,” said Brewer. “He fostered thoughtful discussion, encouraged collaboration, and maintained a clear focus on the responsibilities of governance. His leadership reflected both respect for the Board’s role and a deep commitment to the effective stewardship of the College.”
In reflecting on his years of service, Dr. Bentley shared his gratitude and personal connection to the College. “It’s been a great run. I appreciate the chance to have this opportunity. It’s been important to me,” he said. “My children came to Mitchell, and it’s been a big part of my life. Thank you all.”
Following his remarks, fellow Board members honored Dr. Bentley with a standing ovation, offering applause and heartfelt thanks in recognition of his decades of service and leadership.
Perhaps most importantly, Dr. Bentley never lost sight of the transformative power of education. He embraced the community college mission and the belief that opportunity should be accessible to all who seek it. His unwavering dedication to students, service, and community has left an indelible mark on Mitchell Community College and on generations of individuals whose lives have been changed through education.
“Dr. Bentley’s legacy will be measured not only by the buildings constructed, programs expanded, or resources secured, but by the generations of students who have benefited from his vision, leadership, and commitment to public service,” Brewer said. “Mitchell Community College and the citizens of Iredell County are deeply grateful for his extraordinary contributions and lasting impact.”
