UNC Charlotte Lands $10M Backing From Major Corporate Player

By Collin Huguley – Senior Staff Writer, Charlotte Business Journal

Honeywell International Inc. (NASDAQ: HON) is investing $10 million in UNC Charlotte to boost STEM education and workforce development.

The investment will see UNC Charlotte’s Burson Hall become the Honeywell Innovation Hub. The school will use $1 million of Honeywell’s investment to buy new equipment and technology for STEM programs and applied research. Honeywell’s investment will cover 48 new STEM scholarships, annual senior capstone projects, faculty endowments and research funding.

The 155,000-square-foot Honeywell Innovation Hub will open in 2027. The building is being slightly expanded and renovated as part of the public-private partnership.

Honeywell’s investment aims to advance applied research in areas such as artificial intelligence and grid resilience, among others. It also adds to UNC Charlotte’s momentum in 2025 since earning the prestigious R1 research designation earlier this year.

“As the region’s only R1 research university, we have a responsibility to connect our students with real-world experiences and industry-leading partners,” UNC Charlotte Chancellor Sharon Gaber said. “The Honeywell Innovation Hub will do just that, offering Niners access to advanced tools, collaborative spaces and opportunities that position them to make an immediate impact in their fields. The additional support from Honeywell will also help prepare our students to take the next steps in their careers as future data scientists, engineers and more, ensuring a talented and prepared workforce for our region.”
