Temerity Baseball looks poised to add a new baseball team next year in Mooresville — 20 miles from the company’s minor league team in Kannapolis.
Scotty Brown, operating partner at Temerity Baseball, told CBJ that discussions are in the “embryonic stages” between Temerity, the Durham-based Coastal Plain League and the town of Mooresville to place a Temerity-owned club in Mooresville at the renovated Moor Park in 2027. The park dates to 1936 and is undergoing a $5 million renovation including new restrooms and concessions areas, an upgraded playing field and new dugouts.
The possible addition of a CPL team follows a Facebook post on July 12 by the Mooresville Spinners stating that the town recently informed the team it “will no longer be allowed to play” there after this season. The Spinners started in 2014. They played at Moor Park in downtown Mooresville until renovations began in 2025 and anticipated moving into the renovated ballpark next season.
A Mooresville town spokesperson told The Charlotte Observer this week that the town disputes some of the Spinners’ depiction of how the relationship ended. The spokesperson could not be immediately reached by CBJ.
The Spinners are part of a five-team regional summer league comprised of college baseball players who participate in the league to hone their skills, in part through a mandatory rule that players must use wooden bats. So-called “wooden bat leagues” align with professional standards, with only wood bats permitted, rather than college, which allows hitters to use more forgiving aluminum bats.
The CPL is a wooden bat summer college league made up of 15 teams across Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia — in other words, a bigger version of the Spinners and the Southern Collegiate Baseball League.
The Spinners will conclude their 32-game regular season this weekend. All games are played in June and July.
CPL teams play 48-game seasons spanning late May to early August. Capitol Broadcasting Company Inc. owns the CPL, which was revived in 1997 after folding 45 years earlier. Capitol Broadcasting bought the CPL in 2022.
On July 16, the league said, “Through this partnership with Temerity Baseball, whose ownership group has extensive experience operating successful professional baseball organizations, the CPL looks forward to establishing a successful franchise in Mooresville and creating a lasting tradition of summer baseball at Moor Park for generations to come. The Lake Norman region is one of the fastest-growing areas in North Carolina, with a passionate fan base and a long history of supporting baseball, making Mooresville a natural fit for the league’s continued growth.”
