UNC Charlotte Expected to Become a Top-Tier Research University

Great things are happening at UNC Charlotte. Among the most significant achievements is the progress toward becoming a top-tier research university. The Chronicle of Higher Education has projected UNC Charlotte will be named a Carnegie R1 university in early 2025. UNC Charlotte has long been conducting world-class research, and we are continuing to invest in growing our research portfolio that aligns with key industries in this region; energy, technology, healthcare, and advanced manufacturing.

Chancellor Sharon Gaber often says: “At the core of every great city is a great university.” The R1 classification will be another example of how UNC Charlotte is this region’s great university. There are truly amazing things that are happening  – collectively and simultaneously – only at Charlotte.

In the Charlotte Business Journal,  Truist CEO, Bill Rogers, emphasizes the importance UNC Charlotte’s growth and this top tier distinction is to the region.
