Broad River Aims For Key North Carolina Corridor Market
From Thomas Lester, Retail Editor, Furniture Today
Top 100 retailer Broad River Retail plans to open an Ashley store in Statesville, N.C., in time for Labor Day.
The Fort Mill, S.C.-based retailer will become the anchor tenant in the Broad Street Station shopping center in Statesville, which sits at the crossroads of Interstates 40 and 77 and is in the Charlotte designated market area.
“We’ve been looking at the Statesville market for many years. It’s part of the infill strategy in smaller towns in existing markets,” CEO Charlie Malouf told Furniture Today.
The showroom, located at 1650 E Broad St., will be in a 35,000-square-foot former Food Lion in a corridor experiencing redevelopment near I-77. Malouf said the planned growth in the area made the proposition of opening a store there an attractive one.
“There’s a big development across the street. We also really like the proximity to the interstate. It’s very easy to get to from the north or the south,” he said. “Shoppers are going to come from a wide expanse east, west, north and south.”
The new Statesville Ashley will feature the latest Ashley 7.0 showroom concept, which includes an open, lifestyle-focused layout designed to showcase full-room collections for bedrooms, dining rooms, living rooms and youth spaces. The store will also include Ashley Luxe, Ashley’s new luxury collection and a Sleep Shop.
President Manny Rodrigues said opening in Statesville helps fill in a little more white space in Broad River’s footprint, and creates opportunities for more business and continued growth for the company and its employees.
“We get to be an anchor in the shopping center, and we get to enter in a thoughtful way with a big presence in the 7.0 concept with a strong sleep shop with all our TSI partners, Purple, Bedgear and Ashley Sleep,” Rodrigues said. “It continues to provide opportunities for our Memory Makers to grow internally with leadership positions and to welcome more Memory Makers as we grow out current markets.”
The Statesville store opening is part of a period of activity that also includes new Ashley stores in the Inland Northwest in Spokane, Washington, Moscow, Idaho, and in northern New England in South Portland, Maine. When it opens, it will give Broad River 38 total stores.
