Population Boom | Census Data Show Charlotte Region among Fastest Growing Metros in US

Steady Regional Growth
The Charlotte Region continues its trend of steady growth. According to the latest release of data from the U.S. Census Bureau, the 14-county bi-state region has grown to include more than 2.9 million residents. The region added more than 47,000 to its population from 2022-2023 and more than 127,000 since 2020.

State Growth Among Highest in the Nation
South Carolina ranked as the nation’s top growing state in 2023, growing by 1.7% from the previous year. A particularly impressive feat, considering the state was able to top high growth states like Florida and Texas to earn the number one spot.
North Carolina landed in the top five, growing by 1.3% from 2022-2023. The Charlotte Region is able to take full advantage of being located in two high growth states, growing in population by 1.6% during the same time period, edging out competitors like Nashville (1.5%), Tampa (1.5%), and Atlanta (1.1%).
County by County Growth
Every county in the region managed to make gains in population over the year, with Lancaster County posting the highest growth rate during that time (3.2%). Mecklenburg County still holds a significant advantage in the sheer number of population totals, growing by more than 19,000 from 2022-2023. The growth rate in Mecklenburg County came in at No. 6 in the region.
Conclusion
Low cost of living, thriving industries, competitive tax rates, and more have led the Charlotte Region to become a destination to live, work, and play. Nearing 3 million residents, the region expects continued growth into the foreseeable future.
Mecklenburg County is still a major draw for many people and businesses considering moving into the region. However, trends of late suggest the suburban counties are becoming more enticing than ever. Maintaining and expanding infrastructure and placemaking efforts will be key in ensuring the Charlotte Region continues to be a destination among competitors.
