Statesville Regional Airport Celebrates Grand Opening of New Terminal Building

The City of Statesville proudly celebrated a major milestone with the Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting Ceremony of the new terminal building at the Statesville Regional Airport. The event brought together local leaders, state partners, project stakeholders, and community members to mark the completion of a project that represents both progress and opportunity for the region.

The ceremony began with a moment of silence to honor and remember the seven individuals who tragically lost their lives in a plane crash at the airport on December 18, 2025 – a meaningful reminder of the importance of safety, community, and reflection as the airport moves forward.

A Milestone for the Community

Statesville Mayor Doug Hendrix welcomed attendees and emphasized the significance of the new facility, noting that the terminal is more than just a building – it is an investment in the future of Statesville. The airport plays a vital role in economic development, business recruitment, and regional connectivity, while also supporting emergency services and public safety. For many visitors, the airport serves as their first introduction to Statesville. The new terminal now provides a modern, welcoming, and professional first impression that reflects the city’s growth and vision.

Designed for Growth and Opportunity

Airport Manager John Ferguson highlighted the impact of the new three-level terminal, which was designed to better serve pilots, passengers, and visitors alike. The facility features upgraded pilot amenities, enhanced passenger and gathering spaces, and room for future expansion.

One of the most exciting elements of the project is the third-floor space, which has been designed with the potential for a future restaurant – an amenity that will further elevate the airport experience.

“This facility represents a major step forward for our airport,” Ferguson shared. “It creates a more welcoming environment and positions us for continued growth.”

Beyond improving the user experience, the new terminal strengthens the airport’s role as an economic driver. Airports are often the first point of contact for businesses and investors, and this facility reflects a community that is forward-thinking and ready for opportunity.

A Collaborative Effort

City Manager Ron Smith recognized the many partnerships that made the project possible, including support from City Council, the Airport Commission, City staff, design and construction teams, and state aviation partners. Representatives Jeff McNeely, Vickie Sawyer, and Jason Scronce of NCDOT Aviation were also acknowledged for their support.

“This new terminal represents years of planning, teamwork, and investment in the future of Statesville,” Smith said. “It strengthens our airport, supports economic growth, and creates a welcoming first impression for everyone who visits our community.”

Looking Ahead

While the ribbon cutting marked the completion of the terminal building, it also signaled the beginning of a new chapter for the Statesville Regional Airport. The facility lays the foundation for continued development, expanded services, and new opportunities that will benefit the community for years to come.
