Town of Mooresville Holds A Ceremonial Groundbreaking For Timber Road Extension Project

The Town of Mooresville  hosted a ceremonial groundbreaking for the Timber Road Extension Project on Monday, February 3. Staged at the project construction entrance off Deerwood Lane, the event included Mayor Chris Carney, Eddie Dingler, Mayor Pro Tem, and Town Commissioners, Will Aven, Tommy DeWeese, Lisa Qualls, and Gary West, along with representatives from the developer, LandSouth, Hunter Construction, and Centralina Council of Government.

While the clearing of the land commenced just 60 days ago, the project of extending Timber Road just over a mile to connect Highway 115 to Highway 21 is projected to be completed in 2025. The extension, however, has been a part of the Town of Mooresville’s Comprehensive Transportation Plan as a major traffic alleviation plan since the mid-90s. Original projections suggest the road will alleviate approximately 35,000 to 40,000 trips from around W. Wilson Avenue and going into Downtown which promises to be a major traffic improvement. According to Mayor Carney, “If you are going anywhere in southeastern Mooresville, this is the road you will want to take. We are never going to get around the railroad tracks with lights crossing Broad Street and Main Street. Those are always going to be problematic. The good news is we are giving people a direct route to go east and west without getting stuck in Downtown traffic.”

The overall project, which includes 253 single-family homes and 300 apartments on a 129-acre parcel of land, was unanimously approved by the Town of Mooresville Board of Commissioners in October 2022. The road project is estimated to cost approximately $18 million. The Centralina Council of Government, however, significantly offset that cost with the award of a $15 million grant because it represents a significant project for traffic mitigation and benefit to the community.

Upon completion, the overall project is projected to increase the tax base for the Town of Mooresville by $225 million.
