Joe and Katy Kindred Unveil Plans For New Restaurant in Downtown Mooresville This Year

Acclaimed local restaurateurs Joe and Katy Kindred have their latest venture in sight.

The husband-and-wife duo expects to debut Deepwell in downtown Mooresville in late summer or early fall, they announced May 28 in a Instagram video. They are teaming up with chef Craig Deihl on the concept. Deihl, who is the corporate chef for the Kindreds’ restaurants, will co-own Deepwell.

The restaurant will be in a historic building at 185 N. Main St. The space was previously occupied by sushi restaurant JJ Wasabi’s.

Katy Kindred described Deepwell as a New Orleans-style steakhouse that will serve dry-aged local wagyu beef steaks, house-made charcuterie, local seafood, smoked duck gumbo, oysters and prime rib, among other items.

“Rooted in the timeless tradition of the American steakhouse, Deepwell reimagines the genre through the soulful lens of the Mississippi Delta and the rich culinary legacy of New Orleans,” Kindred Studio said. “Set within a historic building in downtown Mooresville, Deepwell is as much a love letter to Southern hospitality as it is a celebration of bold, honest food.”

The couple runs Kindred Studio, which offers interior design, branding, restaurant and hospitality consulting and project management. Joe Kindred is a James Beard Award semifinalist, while his wife tackles service and front-of-house operations.

Katy Kindred is also behind design and creative brand development at their concepts. She will be handling Deepwell’s interior design. The 4,000-square-foot space on North Main Street includes an outdoor patio that spans about 1,500 square feet.

Deepwell will include an indoor-outdoor bar serving everything from local beer to New Orleans classics like the Sazerac and French 75. The dining room will feature an expansive wine collection and a view into into the restaurant’s glass-enclosed dry-aging and curing room. A private dining room will seat up to 25 guests.

The couple broke into the local restaurant scene with their namesake restaurant Kindred, which opened in downtown Davidson in 2015. They’ve since opened Hello, Sailor in Cornelius; Albertine in uptown Charlotte; and milkbread, an all-day café with locations in Davidson, uptown Charlotte and Plaza Midwood.
